Mercia Behaviour Clinic
Dear Colleague
Over recent years the veterinary profession has shown an increasing interest in behavioural problems, recognizing the distress which this can cause to both pet and owner, and the strain that places on their relationship. However it is often difficult to incorporate behaviour consultations into the daily routine due to the level of time commitment required and concerns about our teaching on the subject at undergraduate level.
Because of this clients have been directed to a variety of sources for behavioural advice varying from the excellence of APBC members, who accept only on veterinary referral, to the more variable abilities of local dog trainers. An additional problem has been the lack of formal qualifications in behavioural therapy which has allowed anyone to call themselves a behaviourist. I believe that for welfare reasons the veterinary profession cannot turn its back on behaviour issues. Research has highlighted that behaviour concerns are the main reason for euthanasia in young, physically healthy animals. We have an obligation to be involved in the prevention and treatment of these and in the education of those that breed, rear and own domestic pets. As professionals versed in examination and diagnosis we are ideally placed to formulate treatment plans and liaise with other professionals such as trainers in order to achieve satisfaction for our clients.
My own interest in behavioural medicine started following a BSAVA weekend course and I have recently completed a postgraduate Diploma at the University of Southampton in companion animal behaviour counseling. During the time I have been studying I have had the opportunity to offer consultations within my veterinary practice. Now I would like to offer a behavioural service more widely within the local area. If you wish to discuss or refer a behavioural case I have enclosed a CABTSG form and leaflets, and can be contacted as detailed below.
Yours Sincerely Mark D. Crighton Mercia Behaviour Clinic 14 Bishops Cleeve Austrey Atherstone CV9 3EU
